Kids First! Peñasco, a program of Taos Health Systems, is changing/re-structuring to offer new services and therapies to families in Peñasco. After 3 years of successful collaboration with Los Brazos and the Peñasco Independent School District, the Kids First Peñasco Program is now poised to collaborate with a new health partner, Non-Violence Works, Inc.
Since 2004, Non Violence Works has provided services to more than 2500 individuals and families in Taos County, and through collaboration with Taos Health Systems, will be able to bring behavioral health services to children, adolescents and adults in Peñasco. Programs to be offered include a Therapeutic Afterschool Program and a Nonviolence Education Program.
“The partnership will provide more opportunity for the existing program to build a sustainable structure that provides direct services and benefits to students and their families.” says Taos Health Systems CEO Bill Patten.
The Kids First! Program and our Peñasco Health Clinic are listed as a model case study in the American Hospital Association’s national 2014 Community Connections: Ideas and Innovations for Hospital Leaders. This is high praise from AHA given the thousands of entries they receive each year.

The Kresge Foundation recently notified our Kids First! program that they would be awarded a grant extension to develop a dissemination plan about the creation of the program, its challenges, its impact on the community, and positioning their work as a model for other communities to adapt. Having just completed the third year for the grant, Kids First! is pleased and grateful for this grant extension to help tell the very positive story of the program and assist with sustainability efforts to continue the program.
Kids First! works to strengthen the connections between children, parents, and community to create vitality and long term health for all people in our culturally diverse region. This innovative project is one of eight initiatives funded by the Kresge Foundation nationwide to enhance the safety net for families through partnership with local health clinics. The eight were chosen from 300 applicants.
Kids First! supports the mental and physical health of Peñasco Valley families. The project is influencing the way our system as a whole approaches health and wellbeing.
The program emphasizes community collaboration with partnering agencies. Events include Family Gatherings at the elementary school, integrating behavioral health into the Taos Health Systems’ Peñasco Health Clinic and offering parenting classes to families and the community. The list of community partners is always expanding. Some of the current partners include Los Brasos, Non-Violence Works, Los Angelitos, Peñasco Independent School District, CAV, WIC, Peñasco Health Clinic, First Steps, and CYFD.
